Tired All the Time? Understand These 5 Causes

If you find yourself battling frequent drowsiness, check out these 5 common causes of fatigue. (The good news is, you can fix them and renew your energy)

  • Vitamin or mineral deficiency: low levels of vitamin D, B12 or iron can leave you feeling listless. Boost your amounts with a multivitamin.
  • The blues: Depression carries with it symptoms of fatigue. Committing yourself to even short amounts of mild exercise can bolster your energy.
  • Adrenal glands: When you have chronic stress your adrenal glands get overworked and lead to adrenal fatigue which affects your energy during the day and restless sleep at night. Find ways to relax and de-stress so your adrenals can recharge.
  • Diet: Packing in the empty calories of junk food will deplete your energy resources. Opt instead for nutritionally dense foods that replenish your energy.
  • Sickness: If none of the typical culprits are responsible for your fatigue, you may have an undiagnosed illness such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or sleep apnea that’s wearing you down. Visit your doctor for a complete physical.

Top 4 Supplements for Women Over 40

For middle-age and mature women (those over age 40), consider your diet first. Look at what you’re eating and find out what nutrients you may be falling short on. These four supplements can help cover nutritional needs not being met through food:

  1. Multivitamin/Multimineral Supplement – A good multivitamin and mineral should be at the top of any supplement list. For women over 40, look for one that contains vitamins C and E, mixed carotenes, selenium and the B-vitamin complex (especially folic acid). Make sure it doesn’t have iron – most post-menopausal women don’t need any more of that mineral.
  2. Calcium Citrate – This form of calcium builds and maintains strong bones, supports healthy blood pressure and can help ease PMS symptoms. Take 500 mg of calcium citrate a day.
  3. Vitamin D-3 – Studies link a deficiency of vitamin D-3 to a higher risk of osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and more. Women will benefit by taking 2,000 IU vitamin D-3 daily.
  4. Fish Oil – 2 grams of fish oil a day deliver a mix of EPA and DHA, two omega-3 essential fatty acids that promote brain and heart health.
