Good God Sunday Morning “Living on Our Grandmothers’ Prayers”

This morning I was blessed with the Holy Spirit bringing to my remembrance in the form of songs and prayers; that praise of my great- grand mother. As the tears flowed down my face and I felt this incredible joy of knowing I know who my God and Savior is , I began to sing, “ If it wasn’t for the Lord tell me what would I do. He’s been every, everything to me”. And as the flow of the Holy Ghost began to move within me and upon me, I began to pray and I began to remember parts of one of Mama Lee’s prayers. And then I thought on your message about our church mother’s of old. I thought of our annual summer visits to the country; how we would rise early on those summers’s Sunday mornings full of joy and laughter. A rambunctious assembly of “has any one seen my shoes, how does my hair look, did any one check the cornbread…”? Four generations of family going to church as one body to worship and praise God. Sunday mornings the house always smelled of some delicious aroma prepared for our traditional after -church dinner. Something freshly baked, fried chicken, purple-hull peas, and candied yams, hot- water cornbread, an array of desserts and other home-grown garden “country” cuisine. I remember the rushing commands of my great, grand and parents shouting out orders to playful children to “hurry up and get dressed, we‘re going to be late for church “. And then the sweetest memory came to my spirit of the calmness, the peace that would come over us as we all bombarded the front door. There standing in the doorway by my Daddy Walker, her husband and prayer partner for over sixty years, was my great-grandmother, Mrs. Annie Lee Ivory Evans, dressed in all her stewardess white, smiling and humming a song of praise. The memory was so sweet it brought the fragrance of Camay soap and Lily of the Valley perfume to my nostrils. I could feel my Mama Lee’s love, God’s presence and I heard her prayer sing out from the past, still sealing my family’s future. “If it wasn’t for the Lord on my side tell me what would I do- Thank you Father this morning for this day of blessing ,that me and Walker, dear Lord, can see your mercy and grace manifested in the faces , health and prosperity of our children, Oh my faithful Lord I bless Your Holy Name ! You’ve been water when we were thirsty; our food in barren lands, you comforted us when we were sick, God you always, always been on hand. You’ve been every, everything God to me…….Amen! Oh Hallelujah! Children I feel like shouting! ”

Encouragement to Be Faithful

3I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

(2nd Timothy 1:3-7)

The promise of eternal life to believers in Christ Jesus is the leading subject of ministers who are employed according to the will of God. The blessings here named, are the best we can ask for our beloved friends, that they may have peace with God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Whatever good we do, God must have the glory. True believers have in every age the same religion as to substance. Their faith is unfeigned; it will stand the trial, and it dwells in them as a living principle. Thus pious women may take encouragement from the success of Lois and Eunice with Timothy, who proved so excellent and useful a minister. Some of the most worthy and valuable ministers the church of Christ has been favoured with, have had to bless God for early religious impressions made upon their minds by the teaching of their mothers or other female relatives.

(Matthew Henry’s Commentary 2nd Timothy 1:1-5)

I woke up this morning praying and praising, bless God! I felt like Singing, Dancing and Shouting for Jesus Hallelujah! It’s been a blessed day in the Spirit!
